Another survival guide to survive Ark: Survival Evolved
Hello again, folks. Ben here with yet another handy guide to help new players get into one of the more popular games out there right now: ARK: Survival Evolved. Thousands of shameless hours have been poured into the development of these rules. If you ask any of my previous tribe mates what Rule Number 'X' is, they'll likely recite it from heart, as I have a tendency to drill these basics into my new recruits. Alright, so here we go!
Rule #1: When Someone Says 'Sup', Just Say 'Sup'.
The ARK is a brutal place that is hard enough to survive without other people trying to violently attack and displace you. If you are given the opportunity for diplomacy, you should take it. Even if the participants in said negotiations are not sincere, you can glean quite a bit from simply listening to the way they communicate. Who knows? You might wind up with a solid alliance.
Rule #2: Don't Wash Another Player's Gun
Now, this seems obvious, but you should never touch another player's personal gear without their permission. You might have the noblest of intentions, but keep in mind that the ARK has a way of making the best laid plans go sideways. If you need to use an ally's tools in a pinch and you just can't get in touch with them in a reasonable amount of time, be sure to take the utmost care of that gear. You're responsible for replacing whatever you might lose and repairing whatever you may break. I've seen half a dozen tribes at least collapse from suspicions of theft and gear mysteriously disappearing.
Rule #3: Always Remember the Pocket Cheeseburger
Don't forget to bring food with you whenever you are heading away from home. Even a short trip can be made considerably more difficult from a lack of food. Starvation has some serious effects in ARK, and you need to be able to offset those with more than just a handful of scavenged berries. I recommend boosting your crafting skill a bit, as doing so improves the quality of custom recipes made in a cooking pot. It is also important to remember that food and drinks crafted at the cooking pot are significantly more shelf stable. I've built entire empires on the sweet buns of a cheeseburger. Never underestimate the power of excellent food.
Rule #4: When You Drop In, Tame A Parasaur
Though quality of life updates have made the parasaur more useful as a tame overall, it's usefulness as an early game mount cannot be overstated. Since their saddles don't require hide, they are easy mounts for early game survivors. They have a reduced stamina consumption while running, and they gather their own food, making them highly efficient as a long distance travel mount. A tamed parasaur can detect nearby enemies as well, allowing you to be prepared for any incoming attacks from sneaky survivors looking to break Rule #1. So, as soon as you can, grab a bola, snatch up a solid club or two, and beat down that goofy looking dino. You won't regret it.
Rule #5: Always Carry A Parachute
This is for those advanced enough to have ready access to flying mounts, as well as those who have a problem with being picked and dropped by bullies with flying dinos. Cheap and easy to make, a parachute can be deployed in a pinch to slow your descent from almost any height. You might think this seems a bit like paranoia. I mean, how often could you possibly need a parachute, right? It's easy to think that way when you are firmly rooted on the ground. But what happens when you crash out of the game at the sky limit on your pteranodon, carrying all of your best gear over the nastiest part of the swamp? Speaking from experience, it pays to have a back up plan. You can save precious hours of time spent hitting supply drops and gathering materials, possibly even save a tame, simply by taking the time to craft a couple parachutes in your down time.
Alright, so there you have it. I hope this helps some of you newer players out there as you get your first start on the ARK. It took a lot of time and effort, and more than a bit of emotional distress, to learn these things the hard way. Hope to see you out there thriving against the elements. Until next time survivors!
