Mario has been in over 250 games. Many of which are considered timeless classics. Some of which helped create gaming as we know, like the original game. Some, like Mario Maker 2, are continuing to change the industry in new and exciting ways. So how does one dissect all of this and find the greatest game to ever feature Mario? It is a nearly impossible task. Nearly.
My contender for best ever Mario game?
Yes, you heard me. A game featuring the cast you know and love, plus a bunch of new ones. It has a spooky curse, an interesting fighting system, and even an entire chapter about professional wrestling. To me, it is everything you could want out of Mario.
Despite it being a turn based RPG, I think it embodies everything good at the franchise. It was weird and wacky in all the right ways. You never quite know what's around the next corner, but at no point does it become too wacky as to wear out its welcome.
The story is well...insane. But its so insane that you get caught along in the madness and everything starts to make sense. Every character has a fun moment, every villain a cheesy line, and even some of the random enemies get their turn in the spotlight.
It has a very fun combat system. Turn based, but with timing based skills for the skilled player to get a little more out of. An in-equipment system that offers subtle but noticeable changes to how you fight. This game is a timeless classic.
But Cj, you say, I don't like the silly nature of the world. That's because you have no joy in your soul.
But then you ask if its so good, why hasn't it been ported to switch? That's simple my misguided friend. Nintendo is powered by tears.
...Go play Paper Mario:The Thousand Year door.
