a Sea of Thieves survival guide
So you have a thirst for treasure on the high seas, do you? Well, it isn't easy riding the winds, cutting a path through treacherous skeletons and bloodthirsty pirates. All for the sweet sound of clinking coins in your purse.
Naturally, this is dangerous work. Lucky for you, we've compiled a list of tips and tricks to help deal with all sorts of threats. Below is a collection of knowledge hard earned by pioneering pirates dating back to the first days of the Sea of Thieves. Here's Ol' Ben Gold's guide to surviving the life of a pirate.
1. Always keep your supplies stocked. When you first spawn in, your highest priority should be stocking those barrels. As far too many hapless seafarers have discovered, it is not easy to win a fight with no cannonballs. So, learn the layout of your chosen vessel and start hitting those loose supply barrels at the outpost you've spawned in on.
If the barrels at your given location have been looted, this pirate suggests heading to the nearest unoccupied skeleton fort. They are easily recognizable by their watch towers and rather small dimensions, as well as their usually obvious names. These forts not only have a plethora of supplies for you to loot, they also contain explosive barrels, which are invaluable weapons in all forms of combat.
2. Keep an eye on the horizon. It goes without saying that other pirates are out there searching for easy targets. So, try to make sure you aren't on that list. A good crew usually has a pirate on deck to defend the ship. Using a spyglass or Eye of Reach scope gives off a visible glint that experienced players look for, which is an important thing to remember.
Sometimes, it is best to just raise your sails without anchoring, given the situation. This tactic might leave your boat drifting slightly, but it makes for a much quicker getaway should you be caught off guard by an ambitious crew. It's important to know which tactics to implement and when to apply them in defense of your loot.
3. Eat the banana when you need the banana. You should never be afraid to cronch. A low health bar in Sea of Thieves can be deceptively deadly, so it is in your best interest to keep that bad bar full. It can be vexing to cram nanners down your gullet every five seconds, but surviving the brunt of enemy attacks is crucial to maintaining the momentum of a fight.
A solid technique to apply here is remapping your fruit key to an unused portion of the controller. This will smooth out the process of getting the treasured yellow fruit into your hand in the first place by removing the need to bring up the wheel. Speed eating is a critical key to success as a pirate.
4. Learn to sail as a team. It is all too easy to fall into the rut of having a person who just stands around while the other works the wheel and the sails. This is something you should try not to do. A standing pirate is a weak link. You should be trying to assist your crew at all times, be it turning a sail into the wind, or helping your designated helmsman find your destination.
Our crew tends to choose a side and start from the front. So, if we are sailing a galleon, two people start up front on their chosen sides of the ship, then they work backwards. It gets even easier if you have someone up above with the helm turning the top sail too. Nothing is more terrifying than seeing a galleon turn all of its sails simultaneously and then come soaring right at you through the waves,
5. Don't panic. A lot of situations are going to catch you unprepared. You might find yourself and your crew surrounded by enemies in many forms. Try to remember to stick to the basics in these situations. Don't take any unnecessary cannon shots and never leave your boat undefended.
If all seems lost, transfer any loot you can to the rowboat. It will stay afloat even if your vessel sinks and you can use it to make a handy escape with the loot. Many a voyage of Ol' Ben's crew have been snatched from the jaws of tragedy by some form of rowboat shenanigans.
The most important thing to remember is to have fun and play for the moment. If you can keep a clear head and a steady hand, you should do just fine. You'll meet legendary pirates and scurvy nobodies alike on your adventures, and there are no limits to the plunder. I hope I see you out there on the high seas.
