Seven out of ten

So when most people think of their favorite games, normally what comes to mind is the best. The top of the top. The Unicorns. The cream of the crop. Critically acclaimed and best sellers. But why does it always have to be that way? Do good memories only come from good games? Does a game's review change how much fun you had with it?

One of my all time favorite games is a little known PS1 classic called Monster Seed. Through the hundreds of games that have come and gone, I have never forgotten that one. Its current rating sits right at 71%. Does that make it any less of a game?

A lot of the top ranked games were made to be as such. Made with mass market appeal. Made to sell copies and make headlines. But game design is an artform. Just like some of the most artistic movies are less known indie movies, the same can be said for video games.

Sometimes when exploring these less talked about games, you may find something with less mass appeal, but more direct appeal. Something that speaks directly to you as a player.

By exploring some of these games you can find a unique experience. Sometimes you can find a game that has a very unique mechanic. A way of playing that you never thought of before. Perhaps a story hook that normally wouldn't even be tried in a less experimental venture.

Next time you find yourself bored with blockbusters and repeated generes, look at the 7 out of 10's, and you may just be surprised with what you find.
